High School in Parkland FL

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

Stoneman Douglas – Parkland FL the only high school

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is a public school located in my hometown of Parkland FL. This school was named after a very famous Floridian by the name of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. She fought to save the draining of the Everglades. Her efforts in stopping developers from taking all the everglades were rewarded with Presidential Medal of Freedom.

This high school was first opened in 1990. The high school has a football, baseball, basketball, wrestling, golf, bowling and track teams. They have many other high school sports there as well. Also the school has a great marching band that has won state championships.

One of their most famous baseball players from Parkland is  Anthony Rizzo and is currently playing in the MLB for the Chicago Cubs.  A lesser known major league baseball player is Matt Fox who also played for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Baseball team.

Outside of a cheerleading coaching scandal that happened at Marjory Stoneman High, the high school had remained out of the public eye. As a matter of fact nothing but good things were known about this school. This high school had been awarded many honors and it is rated an “A” high school in Broward County. In 2009 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was rated number 208 in the United States and number 38 in Florida, which is the highest ranking of any school in Broward County. The High School has school grade of “A” for the 2018–2019 academic school year. According to state test scores, 72% of students are at least proficient in math and 73% in reading. The schools mascot is an Eagle and the principal is Ty Thompson. he is in charge of about 3,200 students. The school colors are Burgundy and Silver.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Drama club wrote a song called “Shine” after a shooting that happened at the school on February 14th 2018. The song became famous after being played at a town hall about school shootings. It was then played again on a March for our lives rally. All the money raised from the sale fo this song goes to help the victims and their families.

The shooting claimed the lives of 17 people. My son was in the 1200 building where it happened. My sons life was spared that day. We carry this emotion and heavy heart with us. It was a moment that forever changed the lives of everyone involved.

It changed what used to be this small quiet city in Broward County. Parkland was so obscure that not even long time residents of Broward County knew of the city’s existence. The days following the shooting were filled with camera crews from all over South Florida and Nationally as well.

One more famous person that went to this Parkland High school is Actress Cassandra Scerbo. She is in one very famous B movie called Sharknado.
